Will you miss out on what Chania has to offer?
1) Visit Elafonisi
Elafonisi stands as the preeminent beach in the region of Chania, renowned for its distinctive pink sands. The remarkable clarity of its waters remains undiminished, even in the face of daily visitation by multitudes, attributable to the perpetual currents that grace its shores. The sand itself presents a velvety-smooth texture, inviting tactile exploration. The global acclaim enjoyed by this beach, however, is not without its concomitant challenges, most notably evidenced during the peak tourist season when crowds gather. Nonetheless, we ardently recommend embarking upon this visitation to fulfill an essential entry on your travel itinerary. A journey of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes is required to access this destination, constituting the lengthiest excursion we propose, yet promising a gratifying experience that transcends its duration.
2) Visit Chrisoskalitisa Monastery
Despite an early arrival, Elafonisi inevitably experiences a surge in visitors. Should the bustling ambiance be of no concern, a complete day can be splendidly savored at this locale; otherwise, a timely transition may be in order. Your next sojourn beckons at the Chrisoskalitisa Monastery, a resplendent testament of 17th-century Eastern Orthodox Christian heritage. This architectural marvel graces the southwest expanse of Crete, Greece, nestled within the Innachori municipal district of the Kissamos municipality, a mere 72-kilometer journey from Chania. Perched 35 meters above the shimmering waters, this monastic sanctuary offers panoramic vistas of the Libyan Sea, an awe-inspiring conclusion to your unfolding expedition.
3) Visit Voulolimni
Situated 70 kilometers southeast of Chania, a mere 500 meters northwest of the Chrysoskalitissa Monastery, lies Voulolimni, colloquially referred to as the “sunk lake.” This geographical feature reveals itself as a diminutive crater ensconced within encircling rock formations, creating a tranquil enclave resembling a small maritime reservoir. It is important to note that while Voulolimni may not conform to the conventional definition of a beach, it functions as a rocky basin that the inhabitants of the village Chrysoskalitissa frequented for aquatic reprieve.
4) Eat at Stomio Tavern
Nestled along the scenic journey from Elafonissi, Stomio Taverna stands as a culinary gem that beckons travelers seeking authentic Cretan flavors. With a remarkable rating of 4.8/5 on Google Maps, this rustic and traditional taverna has left an indelible mark on its patrons.
1) Travel to Kissamos Port
Contact the ferry company to inquire about the timetable and pricing information. It is advisable to arrive at the port approximately 30 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time. Should you embark on your journey early, you may avail yourself of the opportunity to pause en route and enjoy a brief respite with a coffee break in Nopigia Village.
2) Buy a ferry ticket to Gramvousa & Balos
Upon reaching the port, kindly ensure the acquisition of tickets for both the Gramvousa AND Balos destinations.
3) Gramvousa Fortress
You will get to discover the captivating island of Gramvousa, a timeless gem that beckons to those who seek history, adventure, and unspoiled beauty. Perched at the entrance of the legendary Balos Lagoon, this rocky island reveals its secrets through the remnants of a Venetian fortress that has withstood the tests of time. As you ascend to the fortress’s summit, you’ll find yourself transported to a bygone era, where tales of maritime struggles and strategic prowess come alive against the backdrop of the azure Aegean Sea. 4) Balos Lagoon
Its finally time to experience paradise at Balos Lagoon, an enchanting jewel nestled along the rugged coast of northwestern Chania. With its inviting sandy shores and crystal-clear waters that transition from shades of aquamarine to deep blue, Balos Lagoon is a breathtaking haven for those seeking a natural escape.
